Music Magazine Advertisement

For this task we looked at how magazines advertise and how they were different from each other. to begin with we started out with trying to work out how many print magazines we could think of and jot them down. i only managed to get 5 because i hardly pay any attention to print magazines therefore i didn't good in the first section. We then had to find as many print magazines we could find online in a short space of time of a two minutes in doing so i was able to look up 17 magazines that were print magazines. doing this i got to know more and more magazines that before i had no clue about. we also learned about which magazines were single genre or multi-genre magazines. Magazines such as Q were multi-genre magazines because they showed a range of music genres as opposed to Kerrang which is a single- genre which mainly focuses on rock music. We also looked at what sort of people would listen and appreciate which type of magazine in the class.

To end with we had a look why print media is decreasing and the answer to that is the internet. Its faster and much easier to access information on online and its free, although they are some people out there who still appreciate print media it is still dropping dramatically.

Magazine Advertisement
Magazine plays a very big part in an artists career. If they appear in the big magazines that advertise their genre of music then they will get more known as more people read that magazine. This sort of advertisement is  something that most artists try and accomplish so that they get the recognition that they need.

My artists is an R'n'B, Hip Hop and Soul genre which means that he cannot appear in all magazine genres. For example magazines such as Power Play Rock and Metal magazine. Its pretty obvious that with the name, Trey Songz's target audience would not be in  that specific magazine because he is an R'n'B artist and not a Rock and Metal artist.

This picture on the right is the type of target audience that Power Play Rock and Metal magazine targets. Same with the picture below me. This target audience appears to be very bloody and into loud gory music. Which is completely different to what Trey Songz target audience is like.
As you can see from these pictures P.P.R and M's target are very into live concerts with very graphic masks. They seem to express them self a lot when they get to their concerts. However Trey Songz artists will be more laid back and wouldn't go to sure an extreme nature to one of his concerts.  Listening to some of the artists. such axe " Ace Frehley" that P.P.R and M advertise on their magazine can gather that a
lot of his music is very loud and consists a lot of drums and guitars. With the majority of the audience throwing up that symbolic rock sign that is being thrown in the picture on the left.

Another magazine in which you will not find my artist is in Kerrang. Kerrang is a rock magazine similar to P.P.R and M. However Kerrang shows more well known artist in that genre. Also as you can see it has a more newer look to its design and much cleaner compared to P.P.R and M's  website. Although they may still attract the same type of audience as they both advertise rock artists.
Kerrang aslo advertises artist who are quite dark and scary as in the picture on the left. That can indicate what sort of audience would listen to Black Widows music. Goths, Emo's and so forth would be the typical type of audience that advert would be designed for. Again you wouldnt find Trey Songs in a magazine such as this one as none of his target audience would look in such magazine to find out information about him and also this is a rock magazine and not an R'n'B or Hip Hop magazine.

Also another target audience for Kerrang are people that are very much into WWE majority of the wrestlers come out to Rock music. The same music that is played for those wrestlers could be the same music that Kerrang advertises. A lot of people that watch WWE still are very much into rock this is from observing people that are in the audience and also knowing a few people that are into WWE and Rock music as well.

A magazine in which my artist could possibly be shown in is in Q. Q i is a British magazine that showcases aloof different artists and genres in its magazines. Its more of an all rounder magazines as opposed to Kerrang and P.P.R and M.

As you can see form the issues that is has published it has everything from the Foo Fighters to someone like Jay Z. That is quite a massive jump between genres which is why i feel that Q would be the best suited magazine for my artist because it has that flexibility between genres. Also it has a wide range of target audiences because it has a wide range of genres which means  people who read the magazine and might not know Trey Songz as much could listen to one of his songs and they could like it meaning that Trey Songz target audience increases. Q is a very vibrant and colourful magazine that shows a lot of A list artist and you can see there are artists such as Cheryl Ann Fernandez-Versini and Tinie Tempha who are both very well known artist in the music industry however they are not in my artists genre as such but they are just as known and couldn't possibly share a target audience.

Looking at the Q magazine I see that they have included in artist such as Plan B into their magazines. They say that they were going to do a review on him. Plan B is a British Hip Hop artist similar to Trey Songz. they are both singer-songwriters and actors. Also on the same page there was an extract on Jay Z and Kanye West talking about their success and how they released an EP with the same title names as an album Kanye released.  Both these artists are Hip Hop which is exactly the same genre and Trey Songz which means that they are sufficient people who enjoy  Hip Hop who also read that magazine. Therefore meaning I could advertise my artist in this magazine because I have seen other artists that are in the same genre being advertised in the magazine.

This is J Cole who is a Hip Hop artist like Trey Songz. Cole laid down raps over homemade beats from age 15 in Fayetteville, North Carolina, before relocating to New York. Cole and Trey were similar is that they both seriously started taking passion in their work from their teen age years. Cole was 15 when he began being serious and Trey was 14. However Trey never wanted to be a singer to begin with but with the work and perseverance of his mother and other people helping him realises how good his voice was. From those ages they both became very serious in what they were doing and success was the goal. since then they have both become very successful in the industry, releasing multiple albums each and touring all over the whole. Also they released a song together. Which could mean that they could share a target audience.

I then had a look at Q's media kit to try and have a look at their statistics and they aren't very beneficial for my artist. As Q was one of Britain's notorious magazines I expect that its age range would be quite broad.  However it says that their readership is 437,000 which to be fair to them is the biggest UK Music magazine hoer the median age read is 29 and Treys Songz readers are usually between the ages of 16 and 25 and are also mainly females. Q have a rating of 75% males and only 25% females, this is not good because my artist will hardly have any target audience. The advert would only go to an estimate of 18,920 females. Although it has a readership of 377,000 and a circulation of 61,485 it still wont be able to target a large amount of my target audience as the majority of readers are males. However it is still worth advertising in Q just to create a bigger fan based for Trey even though it may be a few people. Taking into account all of the pros and cons of Q I think that its worth looking into a different magazine purely because my artists target audience is very limited in that magazine.

Conventions of  Music Magazine Advertisement

For this task i have to look at the conventions of a music magazine. The artist is that magazine and how they have advertised to make sure that they pull in their targeted audience. I feel that from doing this task i can gan the necessary information needed to make an advert successful. I will explore how they incorporate the artist genre into a picture, or an artists album into a picture. I feel after gaining the research i will be able to get a just of how to incorporate my artist's genre into an advert that will attract the targeted audience.

This is Mr Hudson's music magazines advertisement. Mr Hudson is a British R'n'B/ Pop artist. This cover had the same characteristics tat you would find on a CD cover. it has the artists name in bold at the top which stands out a lot. Its also in black which is simple yet effective because its the darkest colour in the magazine. i expect they done this to scream Mr Hudson's name out to his targeted audience. Also R'n'B is a very chilled genre with deep meaning and i feel i get that sort of feeling from his image because he seems to be starting away from the camera which to me feels like his full of mixed emotions on love. Theres a second image that seems to be facing the opposite way to the other image of Mr Hudson. I feel like that is a second persona that he may have. Again with the link of love.  There is also the album title on the advert which is placed underneath his name. Its written in full caps and his name is, in fact the whole advertisement is written in caps. I cannot work out which magazine this is but i feel that writing in caps  may be a preference that they do.  in overall i think that this advert is fairly good in that its clear who the artist is and theres an image of the artist as well for those who may not know who Mr hudson is. They kept the font simple which makes is easy to read.

This is Jessie J who same as Mr Hudson is a British Pop and R'n'B artist. However Jessie strays more to the Pop genre than R'n'B. This is a music magazine for her debut album "Who Who Are" which is clearly stated in the front of the cover. Jessie's name is clear dead on in the middle of the advert which a cursive look font, also her album name in slotted just beneath her name in white also in cursive writing. The colour that screams out the most on this advert is Black. Very different to Mr Hudson;s which had a  bit more colour to its advert. In this advert Jessie dominates the advert a lot more, she fills majority of the space. She also has very dark hair and very dark lipstick, which both stand out greatly. If you didn't know Jessie J id say that tis album gives a more rock feel genre purely because of the dark colours that take up the advert and also what Jessie is wearing.  However in this advert they have include a worldwide famous song that Jessie J has done. they say that the album will include the 'International Smash Price Tag" feat B.o.B. including things like this will entice people to want to buy the album because such a world famous song in included in her album. In addition to that they may feel that since she produced such great record, they might be a few more songs they haven't heard in the album that are just as good as " Price Tag".  In terms of colour i feel that the black and the yellow work well because they are such strong colours, which on a rack of magazines will stand out because of how strong the two colours are. Also including the record labels is another way of advertising.  Mr Hudson also has his record labels at the bottom of the advertisement.

This is Robyn Rihanna Fenty  or better know as "Rihanna." Rihanna is an artist that is spread across quite a few genre such as R'n'B, Pop, Reggae Hip Hop and Dance.  Again with this advert it has the artists name and the artists album name. quite different to the pervious adverts i have researched is that this advert has the date in which the album will be released. This is something that i can also include into my advert so that people will know straight away when my artists album will be released. This advert is very different to the others because  it has the music magazine image, then on that image it has what appears to be the CD case cover for the album. I think thats quite a clever thing because is means that people can could to grips with how the album is going to look. Also included in this magazine as with all the otters is the title of the album. This reoccurrence shows to me that including the album title is something that i will have to do. Which makes sense because you want people to know what album is coming out so that they are able to look for the right one and buy it. Colour wise there is one colour that dominates both the magazine and the CD case cover. Red is a very powerful colour which connotes love, danger and blood which are all things that could be expected in the album. Also something that i have noticed is that the name of the artist tends to be placed at the top and their album name is usually below.

This is Florence and the Machine's magazine advertisement for their album, Lungs. Again with this advert the name of the artist or band in this case is at the top of the magazine advertisement. This time the front is quite similar to the font we seen  in Jessie J's advert. Its written in cursive like writing. The name of the album is also in a different font, which is the first magazine that has chosen a different font for the  album title. However it still has what appears to be the record label at the bottom as with the others. Also in addition to that as with the Rihanna advert, the date of the album release is also included in the magazine advertisement. However from all the other adverts i have reviewed this one is the only that means anything about Vinyl's. The idea of vinyl's gives you a sense of what sort of genre this band is. I seems like a rock/indie band. I say this because those genres are still the few genres that still make vinyls. also similar to Jessie J's advert this one in mainly dominated by dark colours, which i feel enhances the woman in the image.

My Artists magazines

These are a few magazines that Trey has appeared in. i am exploring how Trey has be portrayed in magazines to try and gain knowledge on how to design my music magazine that will enable the audience to link it with Trey Songz

This is an online magazine called 'UrbanBridges' which is an American based magazine which has shown Trey Songz. In this magazine they interviewed Trey Songz  which is when he says that quote o the top right. However here i am focusing more on the image rather than the text. The image here is Trey Songz with a beautiful  girl who has her legs wrapped around him. Trey is a very sexual character in and out of music so this would not shock his audience if they were to see this image. The girl appears to be in mid orgasm and his face is fixated on her. this image shows a lot go passion and tension. Which i think works well because it makes the audience feel comfortable looking at the image because Trey and the girl don't seem awkward taking that picture. This is something that if i was to do, i would want to achieve as well because it makes the audience reading comfortable and not feel uneasy about looking at the picture

This magazine is also another American based magazine which is both online and print paper. This time Trey is by himself and again half naked, which shows that sexual character that he is. However this time his face is a lot more serious to the previous magazine. His positioning is more central and takes up the magazine a lot more. His body structure shows his physic, which is obviously targeted towards his broad female audience. If i was to do this with my music magazine i would have to make show that my chosen Trey is comfortable with his body and has a bit of a muscular body.

Honey is another American based magazine that Trey has appear in and in this one he shows he more gentleman side of things. Trey is in suit which looks very classic. His audience which is mainly female can fall in love with Trey even more because he has a varied type of pictures that he takes for magazines. He has the sexual hall naked orgasmic pictures and then he also has the smart gentleman like pictures which would still be orgasmic to his female audience. I think that, that picture works well,  this is because it goes with the reason of why Trey is in that magazine in the first place. it appears theres a scandal between Trey and R.Kelly and also the talk on romance. The image makes Trey look more mature. However i could still do this for my magazine as well. i could have my chosen Trey wearing formal clothes and looking smart as Trey is in the above picture.

Billboard is an American based magazine both online and print paper. Trey appear here about how much of a star he is. this was just a general interview which is why is picture is very simple without much effect as the other magazine covers I have previewed. Here Trey looks very simple, which is something I could do of for my magazine as well. However I don't think is very effective, it does not catch your eye as the other magazines which puts me off from doing a really simple picture for the magazine.

Conclusion

Inclusion think that I have gain a lot of knowledge and ideas on what to do for my magazine. I want the magazine to be effective and make people want to pay attention to it a read it. If the picture does not catch their eye then they are not going to want to read it magazine as much as they would if an image stood out. This is why I think that if I capture certain elements from ' UrbanBridges, Vibe and Honey' and create an image that has all the things that made those images stand out. I feel that i could quite possibly create something quite exceptional. Having an attractive female with Trey will draw in the male customers and having Trey half naked will draw in the females. I have to find the correct balance between everything to make sure that it appeals to my targeted audience.

Starting the Magazine process.

As i have questioned the public on what font type they liked for the digipack and felt that the same font has to be used in the magazine, so there is a connection and has a direct link to the album.

My questionnaire was close to accurate with the majority of people i asked picking one of the three that i liked the most and at the end it was those three that were the final contenders. i think that the one that i am going to go for the digipack is going to have to be the font i have put below. I like this one because of the expanding bottom half of some of the letters, it makes jot stand out a lot more. its also very simple and clear to read, the other two may cause problems to read which is something i don't want.

Final font type for the digipack. and the Magazine.
Now the next step it to work out the font and writing that is going to be around the magazine. Also by doing all the fonts before the pictures helps to plan the actual picture its self as i know what is written in the magazine. Looking at the above magazines where Trey Songz appears i can identify that the writing they use in the magazines is very simple and scattered all around the image. that is something is something i am going to go for.
In preparation for the making of the magazine advertisement I had to choose what sort of advertisement I wanted. The choices I had where; Full page, half page and Double page i believed that one will page will allow me to get the best out of the advertisement, with out the need to constricting myself to a small section in the magazine and overworking with the double page. the measurements I used for this advertisement was from the magazine Q as this looked to the most likely for me to use.

The measurements where in the magazines media pack.

I then created a template on photoshop - using the ruler tools - which I would then later use to create the advertisements based on theses measurements.

The template is shown below

The lines would help me as they would be used as guide lines so I know where the image is likely to be cut out so I don't put any text of key images outside these lines

My Music magazine process

The images below are the images that i thought would be possible pictures for my artists magazine advert

Process
the final picture that i thought would best fit the magazine advertisement was the picture below with my artist looking down with his foot tucked behind his other foot. The reason i picked this image is because i fell that there was a lot i got do with it. As he was looking down towards the right. i thought that i could add all the writing that that i wanted to add into the advert on the right side of the image. Also the photo graphic pose performed by the artist is a very well know pose that celebrities do when they go on photo-shoots.the whole idea of looking down and not actually looking at the
camera. I wanted to capture that same effect and incorporate it into my music magazine advert. examples of other artist doing the pose looking down instead of the camera are; Drake, Chris Brown, Justin Timberlake and Justin Bieber.

As clearly shown all those artists are all looking down, which reassures me that this is a well known pose that artists do when they are on photo-shoots.

I used photoshop as my editing software for my CD digipack so i now felt comfortable with it and i thought tat i should again use it for my music magazine advert. this is how the image looked originally on photoshop before i edited it. It was photographed in low lighting which meant that the image was not as clear as i intended for it to be be. Therefore instead of keeping the white background that now seemed grey, i decided to cut out the artists and paste him of a different back ground.

To do this i used the Lasso tool which enable me to cut out the parts that i wanted and then it would remove then from the whole image as shown in the picture below

this is what the image looked like i after i had cut it out and i put it onto my new white background with the magazine measurement on the side. the only downfall now was that the image was that the image was still quite dark and the face of the artist was not showing as well as i wanted it to.
Therefore i used the RGB and HDR tools to help as some light to the picture and now as shown in the image on the right, the image now has more light in it. This enhanced the artists face to be much lighter, now we are able to see his face much easier as opposed to how the image looked before it was edited.

The image on the right was me playing around with a spot light in the effects panel to add a glow to the image but i quickly changed that idea as it seemed really out of place on the advert.
After taking out the spotlight i focused more on the text that would appear on the advert. I wanted to keep the same font as i done with CD digipack so then there was a link between the two.  As i started to add the text into this advert it became too cramped and i began to dislike it. It started to seem more like a biography rather than an advert. I changed my idea and went for a 'less is more' sort of idea. I also felt that the red was not working in the image and i decided to stick to the same colours that i used in my CD Digipack so then there was a link between the two. I kept the red for the quotations that were given by a BBC journalist about what she thought about Trey Songz. The addition of a quote was something i had noticed occurred in a few magazine adverts i seen in the Q magazine.

Now after i had removed all the text that i didn't want i changed the layout of the name of my artist and make made it longer.

I then moved the artist name to the top of the advert and i spread out the letters to take up more of the space at the top of the image. I also added in the date in which the album would be released again but this time it was in black instead of being the red colour is was before.

I seen the idea of having the digipack cover on one of the adverts i seen in the Q magazine adverts and i thought that it would have been a good idea to add that to my magazine advert as well. This would enable my artist audience to know why the CD digipack looked like when they were going to go buy it in stores. I also added int he record company that my artist was signed on to, this was to show that my artist was not independent and was with one of the worlds most known record labels.
Soon after i could see my magazine advert piecing together, i then started added all the sponsors on the bottom part of the advert, i included Amazon and HMV as those are the few places in which my artists target audience could get the album when it comes out.

To finish off with i then added the Q magazine website as that is where my artist would be advertised in.

after looking at the finished digipack, i felt that maybe the picture of what the digipack looked like was not fitting in well with the image as a whole. I i went back to my idea of 'less is more' and i took out the picture, but i was now left with a lot of white space where that image was. So i decided just to move the writing that had the date which the album would be released. This now looked a lot better and i really liked what i had done.

To finish off the music magazine advert i then changed the red writing on the above picture and i made in black and i stretched it out a lot more.

i also added in the name of the album so then people knew what album they would be looking for when they wanted to buy it.
